So You Think Being Rich is all Bliss?

And we thought billionaires are free from headaches! Forbes.Com, a primary source in wealth-related news, wrote about the “Legal Headaches of Billionaires.”The news tells of a number of individuals who made it rich and became billionaires, but were soon dragged into court fights as governments found dubious records in  their books. They all either pleaded guilty, or found guilty of the crimes. It only goes to show that some would do anything just to get rich, or to secure their riches.

Admittedly, the love of money is a primary factor in most, if not all, of today’s billionaires. How many rich people have been robbed by Nigerian swindlers? How many have been robbed of their precious dollars by scams in the Internet?

Neither is being poor a good option. But there is a balance between the two extremes that we need to learn, especially in times like these. It is called contentment. Paul tells us that contentment can deliver us from “temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.” (1 Timothy 6.9 NIV)

Perhaps, we can learn from this unsolicited advice from Proverbs 30.7-9:

Two things I ask of you, O LORD; do not refuse me before I die:

Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.

Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the LORD ?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.
