Lessons I Learned in 2008

Another year has passed into history. Whatever things transpired in 2008, whether good or bad, cannot be undone. Looking back, we may have regrets over some things we could have, and should have, decided on more wisely. But the way to go from here on is to sincerely learn the lessons so we can make the right choices and decisions this time around.

I have learned many lessons in the past year and I am posting them here hoping that others can also learn from them.

Never trust a person for his or her high profile. It is too easy for us, or at least for me, to trust a person who is in a good position in the society or in work. Admittedly, I take great pride in having great men around me, which led me into a false comfort zone that everything is going to be alright. I learned this lesson in a very hard way.

Always write your plans and stick to them. Many good intentions never become a reality when we do not keep track on them on regular basis. Writing things down in a journal can greatly help put things into action.

Don’t forget to save. There is one joke that makes for a good lesson: Satan lost to Jesus in a battle involving a PC because Jesus saves. It is good to live for the day, but you don’t have to spend all your hard earned money in one day. Save, not because of fear, but because you want to do something more noble outside of your own self.

Pay attention to quiet persons. I used to think that when a person is quiet he’s just wants to be left alone, but he’s okay. It is not always true, the quieter the person the deeper his problems could be. They should be attended to graciously.

A mind’s best friends are good books. Books inspire me. But 2008 was the only year when I have never purchased and read a single book. I used to read a lot and I am a frequent book store customer. I like to read because good books help me understand more about life in the natural and spiritual levels.

A healthy body is just as important as a healthy mind. My lifestyle is far from healthy. Many days I just sit and write and never shed a drop of sweat. I try to eat less but that didn’t help me from gaining lots of weight. It’s time I do something about this intentionally.

More activities should be balanced with more time in prayer. In the rush to get many things done in as short a time as possible, I have neglected a very important tool in a Christian’s armory, prayer. I realized that I need to pray more in order to get more things done in the power of God’s might.

Never underestimate the value of a family altar. Our family altar is sort of an on and off case. We’ve had many answered prayers, most of them by binding our hearts and minds with God’s. This year I intend to gather my family more closer to God in the altar of prayer. I still believe that God’s ways and thoughts are higher than mine.
