You can Harness your Leadership Capacity

What do successful companies, progressive ministries and happy families have in common? They have good leadership. We need leaders in the ministry as well, not just good leaders, but spiritual leaders who can rise up to the challenges of the day. Truth is, we already have leaders among us. But they need to be inspired, trained and equipped so that they can be used of God to the fullest extent of their God-given ability.

I believe that God’s people are born leaders. Created in the image of God, who is the ultimate leader and from whom all authorities come, they are each given gifts and spiritual abilities to serve and minister to God in different levels and capacities, from the greatest of prophets to the simplest employee.

When God created man, He also commanded them (the male and female) to “be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it, and have dominion over all” of God earthly creatures. (Genesis 1.27, 28) They were to take control of the earth and all living things on earth so that, I believe, God’s purposes and plans might be fulfilled on this third planet from the sun.

Even though our sinful birth brought us into the bondage of sin and all forms of evil and wickedness, God has made available to us all the resources we need so that can learn from God Himself all that is necessary to rise above mediocrity and worthless living. We can learn to live victoriously, by faith, so that we will are no longer tossed by the circumstances and often bitter tragedies of life. But by our God-given power and authority, we will subdue our enemies and take what rightly belong to us – peace, health, success, etc.

The good news is we can develop our leadership abilities to suit God’s plan in our lives. Whatever our calling, whatever our situation, there’s room for improvement. I suggest you consider the following:

Follow the leadership of Christ. I was often told in my school days that a good leader is a good follower. That is true. But there’s more. Good leaders follow only the good things. (1 Thessalonians 5.15; 3 John 1.11) Jesus is unarguably the best leader that ever walked on earth, and following Him is the single best thing that we can ever do as a believer of God.

Obey the instructions of the Scriptures. One Pastor once said that the Bible is not a book of suggestions but of commands. And they are God’s commands. If we require our earthly leaders to abide by the constitution, it is only right that God’s children, who will one day reign with Christ, learn to obey Bible instructions.

Learn from the examples of others. We say experience is the best teacher. But I think the wise learn from other’s experiences. Why go through the same ordeal when you can escape it? Failures in leadership position can be costly. It is best to see where and why others failed and take the lessons to heart.

Stir up the gifts of the Spirit. I believe that we can best serve God and fulfil His plans in our lives by ministering according to our gift or gift mix. Every one of us should discover these gifts and use them for God’s glory and in service to others. Once you know, ask God to give you wisdom in nurturing and developing these gifts so you can use them properly.

Buy books that talk about the lives of God’s men. It’s like enrolling in a class on leadership or sitting at a master’s feet, only that you have their minds in book form that you can read again and again. The best books I’ve read so far are from the such authors as Stu Weber and John Maxwell.
