Studying the Scriptures has become much easier these days, thanks to the computer technology. Today, there is a wide array of Bible software to choose from. One software that stands out is the e-Sword. Created by Rick Meyers in 2000, e-sword is now used my millions of Bible students and teachers, with more than 8 million downloads as of July 2008. So what makes this software very popular?
E-Sword is user friendly. Any novice can quickly get acquainted with its interface. All the important contents are readily available as soon as it is opened.
The inteface is divided into four major parts: the Bible, commentaries, and references. The installer contains the KJV Bible with Strong’s Concordance numbers readily available. There are almost a hundred Bible versions to choose from. Commentaries from old and new authors are also available for download, as well as a number of dictionaries and references. All these are can be easily accessed with one click of the mouse.
E-Sword is very “searchable.” The software has a powerful search capability for detailed study. And when you want to learn more about a particular word, just double-click on it and the reference window quickly opens or informs you that a definition of the word is available.
E-Sword is customizable. Sometimes we want to improve the default font to the types, sizes and colors that best suit our viewing experiences. E-Sword makes it easy for the user to do just that. One can also study Bible versions side-by-side by using the parallel tab on the Bible box and choosing as many as four versions that the user wants to see at the same time.
E-Sword offers lots and lots of resources. Besides the Bible versions in as many languages, e-Sword also comes with downloadable dictionaries and commentaries to help the student or teacher in his/her study. There are also a number of graphic resources, my favorite being the illustrations created by Clarence Larkins. Books from great authors are also available as extras.
E-Sword also comes with STEP Reader, a file format used by other software makers for the storage of Bible references. By downloading the the free sampler one can get access to great titles and worthwhile reading.
E-Sword is free. Rick Meyers has devoted hundreds of hours for this software and yet he makes it available to every one for free. That in itself really makes this software great.
I have been using the software for many years and it keeps getting better with every new version. I highly recommend e-Sword!
